How Should Chinese-Language Creators in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia & Singapore Publish Comics?

Publishing guide for Chinese-speaking creators in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore: which language per market, simplified vs traditional, payouts, and why a 90/10 platform favors early regional creators.

Which language for which market?

MarketLead withWhy
TaiwanTraditional ChineseNative script; largest Traditional Chinese webcomic audience
Hong KongTraditional ChineseNative script; strong Hong Kong comics culture
SingaporeEnglishEnglish is the working language and school medium — reading behavior skews English even among Chinese-speaking readers
MalaysiaSimplified Chinese + EnglishChinese-educated readers use Simplified; English editions widen reach

Inkkes lists series language explicitly and supports English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean metadata, so one series can carry multiple language editions over time.

Simplified or Traditional — does it matter?

Yes, and it is the most common mistake. Taiwan and Hong Kong readers experience Simplified text as foreign — publishing Simplified-only to those markets signals you are not writing for them. Conversely, Malaysia and Singapore Chinese readers are Simplified-educated through the Chinese-school systems. The rule is simple: Traditional for TW/HK, Simplified for MY/SG Chinese editions, English-first for SG overall.

What should regional creators verify before committing to a platform?

  1. Payout support. Does the platform pay out to accounts in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore — in what currency, on what schedule?
  2. Copyright terms. You should keep 100% of your copyright — Inkkes takes only a non-exclusive distribution license.
  3. Discovery odds. On a mature platform you compete with millions of chapters; on a founding-stage platform your work is the front page.
  4. Language tooling. Multi-language titles, descriptions, and search matter if you plan parallel Traditional, Simplified, and English editions.

Why does being early in Asia compound?

Every creator who joins a young platform grows its library, and a bigger library attracts the readers who attract the next creators — the virtuous cycle runs fastest for whoever arrives first. Regional pioneers additionally become the face of their market on the platform, which is visibility no late joiner can buy back.
